Testimonials

– Kismet Since 2005 –

“I’ve had a few therapists in the past, never developing the comfort to share what I need to share. I suffer from anxiety and since starting my sessions with her I feel less anxious, more confident, understood, accepted and I don’t feel judged. We’ve been working through EMDR and it’s been a great process so far, she always makes sure I feel safe and if I need to stop I can, there is no pressure. I am looking forward to my journey of healing and thankful to have Heather to guide me through it.”

“Heather Phillips has been there for our family when we have needed her the most. Family members and those dealing with addiction and mental illness often times feel paralyzed and alone. We sure did. When we found Heather we found hope. Her kindness, knowledge, and foresight is something not easily found. We believe our son is in the best great hands possible. She truly cares. This is more then just a job for her. Our family recommends Heather to anyone looking for support and guidance with addiction and over all well being. You won’t be disappointed!”

“Heather has vast knowledge of the development of teens, and is aware of the unique issues they face.  She is able to differentiate between common teen problems and bigger issues that need specific therapies. She has a wonderful rapport with her clients, and instantly makes them feel comfortable. Heather has helped my teen through some complex challenges over the past year, and has been persistent in identifying and treating core issues.  I have seen my teen become stronger and more resilient with Heather’s techniques. She has also reached out to communicate with us as parents when appropriate, which was beneficial and appreciated.”

Hi, I’m Heather

My passion for becoming a counselor derives from my own personal experience in adolescence going through counseling myself. I remember feeling scared, alone, and as if every counselor that met me was phony and had no idea how I was feeling. At this early age, I decided that one day I would become a mental health therapist and help young people; and be there for others as I so desperately needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Individual Therapy

What type of counseling will I receive?

Kismet Counseling specializes in working with persons who may have negative experiences in therapy in the past or have felt as though they just haven't "clicked" with counselors.

I've been working in the helping profession since 2005 and pride myself on making people feel comfortable, safe, and allowing them to not feel judged.

Whether you have felt shame, embarrassment or misunderstood, I am here to be open-minded and affirming of whatever your background and experiences have been. I provide psycho-therapy via talk therapy, individualized advocacy, and bring a wealth of personal experience as well as academic expertise to ensure you are receiving the best care possible.

Do you offer alternatives to in-person counseling?

Yes, Kismet Counseling offers video/tele-health counseling services via HIPAA compliant virtual portal.

Clients wishing to participate in video-counseling exclusively need to discuss that option with me to determine if this alternative form of counseling is a good fit.

What is EMDR therapy and will it help me?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based tool to help persons heal from past trauma or distressing events experienced in their life.

According to the EMDR Institute, numerous studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

There has been so much research on EMDR therapy that it is now recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the Department of Defense.

Given the worldwide recognition as an effective treatment of trauma, you can easily see how EMDR therapy may be effective in treating the "everyday" memories that are the reason people have low self-esteem, feelings of powerlessness, and all the myriad problems that bring them in for therapy.

Over 100,000 clinicians throughout the world use the therapy. Millions of people have been treated successfully over the past 25 years (EMDR Institute, 2019).

EMDR is just one of many tools that Kismet Counseling uses to help clients. EMDR is a gradual process that the provider and client will discuss prior to consideration of this technique. To read more about EMDR and find more information please visit the Resources link.
